2007 Biennial Talk

The boundaries of individuals, their relation to larger units, and the ways in which groups are static or change interest me, as do familial and social groupings. I’m exploring what connectedness means and am interested in ways of mapping traceable connections.
I use and reinterpret natural and organic forms, which have always seemed to me to be ready metaphors for physical and emotional states, suggestive of certain personality types or feelings.
I am also interested in the differences between the beauties that arise in nature and in what we can create. I use a variety of materials in these sculptural installations, whatever seems to best express a given idea. Using age-old fiber techniques in non-traditional ways reaffirms my own connection to the past and future.
I enjoy a sense of the ridiculous in my work even as I invite a quieter, more meditative experience.
