Position: Senior Major Gifts & Planned Giving Officer

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Development, develop and implement a best practice major gifts program that manages all rated prospects and is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of these prospects. This program will allow the Museum to manage current donor relationships, identify new donors, rate donors according to their capacity and inclination to give, and increase both unrestricted and restricted giving.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Manages the major gifts program; develops lists of major prospects, and develops major gifts portfolios that are manageable for the Director of Development and the major gifts officers, and potentially for the Director.

Develops the infrastructure necessary for prospect management; manages performance of staff in the major gifts area and determines the metrics for accountability.

Develops a prospect management program that can be managed electronically and form a relevant internal team that meets regularly to report their actions, update their portfolios, and present moves and results to date.

Staffs the Director when he/she serves as fundraiser.

Carries a portfolio of major donors. With the Development Committee and other interested board members, develops additional list of known potential donors and rate them. Engage Board members to identify summer residents who qualify as major prospects. When electronic screening is completed, develop a process that qualifies prospects as potential major donors. From these lists, develop staff assignments.

Develops and implements the fundraising plan for the Homer Campaign, including developing a gift table required to complete the Homer Campaign and a list of prospects for it. Work with the Director and the curatorial department to find Homer enthusiasts outside of Maine, and with the Special Assistant to the Director to implement the campaign program.

Develops and manages a deferred giving program, including choosing which vehicles to market, finding a custodial bank, identifying likely donors, and preparing an educational program for potential donors including seminars and brochures.

Develops effective template for multi-year pledges, and templates for endowed gifts including a Memorandum of Understanding.

Works with Board and other volunteer cultivators and solicitors.

Serves as liaison to a Major Gifts Committee, Campaign Committee (when in campaigns), Deferred Giving Committee, and other Committees as assigned.

Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

Complies with all Portland Museum of Art safety rules and procedures.

Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with five to ten years of increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience, including major gifts, planned giving, capital campaigns, and endowment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent planning, organization, and multi-tasking skills.

Excellent management skills, including the ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff.

Knowledge of budget planning and administration.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and those outside the organization.

A broad network of community contacts.

Ability to effectively operate computers and specialized software necessary for assigned duties.

Ability to pass a criminal background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The majority of work is performed in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc. Employee operates computer, printer, photocopier, typewriter, postage machine, and other office equipment. Work involves extended sitting, computer use, and small muscle tasks.  Some regional and national travel may be required.
