GENERAL SUMMARY:


Under the general supervision of the Café Manager, cooks, prepares, and serves food to Museum Café customers and assists with Café operation, maintenance, and inventory control.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


1. Cooks and prepares appropriate food for the Museum Café in accordance with established procedures and standards and in compliance with food safety regulations.

2. Serves food to customers and provides friendly and positive customer service. Answers customer questions and provides general museum information as requested.

3. Assists in inventory management and keeps track of items that need to be ordered. Receives orders, checking for accuracy of receipt and quality of product, and restocks items as needed.

4. Provides catering services for Board Meetings, trustees, donors, and Museum departments.

5. Maintains a positive Café and kitchen appearance by performing regular cleaning and organization.

6. Assumes duties of the Café Manager when he or she is absent or unavailable. Oversees the front and back of the house and places orders for low-stock items.

7. Operates the cash register and credit card machine to accurately and efficiently process sales transactions.

8. Assists in the opening and closing of the Café and the cash register when required.

9. Regularly rotates food and drink options to generate variety and originality.

10. Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

11. Complies with all Portland Museum of Art safety rules and procedures.

12. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:


May train new café staff and provide general guidance and direction to anyone working in the café.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:


High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Three to five years of experience in cooking, food service, and customer service, including high quality and large quantity food production.

QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Strong knowledge of proper food handling, safety, storage, rotation, and overall sanitation requirements.

2. Experience and ability in operating kitchen and food service equipment.

3. Experience and ability in operating cash register, including proper opening and closing procedures.

4. Strong interpersonal, oral communication, and customer service skills.

5. Effective time-management and multi-tasking skills.

6. Ability to work independently and effectively in the front and back of the house.

7. Ability to work cooperatively and productively with coworkers.

8. Physical ability to stand for extended periods and to lift heavy, awkward items weighing up to fifty pounds.

9. Must be available to work evening and weekend hours.

10. Ability to pass a criminal background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The majority of work is performed in a café setting, including working in a hot kitchen for extended periods of time. Work requires extensive standing and walking, as well as frequent bending, crouching, and lifting of heavy objects weighing up to fifty pounds. Operates cash register and various kitchen equipment, including oven, stovetop, coffee maker, microwave, and mixer. Work involves regular small muscle tasks, including the use of knives, peelers, and other utensils.
