The Annual Fund helps support all museum activities from maintaining and expanding the PMA collection, to funding daily operations, to ensuring that we continue to welcome visitors who otherwise would not have access to these kinds of art experiences, and enables the museum to serve more than 140,000 visitors annually including more than 9,000 schoolchildren and chaperones.
Last year, more than 9,000 K-12 students and chaperones experienced art through the Free School Tours program.
In its 23rd year, the museum will host the annual Youth Art Month installation in March as part of National Youth Art Month, which promotes art education and encourages public support for quality school art programs.
Through the Homer High School Fellows program, students from the greater Portland area spend several weeks in the summer making art at the museum, visiting the Winslow Homer Studio, and creating programs for teens at the PMA.
Admission is free for all every week during Free Fridays, enabling more than 33,000 visitors each year to experience all the museum has to offer. Free admission is also offered to children ages 14 and under, all Portland High School students, and all Maine College of Art (MECA) students. Discounted admission is also available to all seniors and students.
The Annual Fund directly supports free access to the museum in various ways. For example, through the museum’s digital initiatives, the public has uninhibited access to more than 18,000 works of art online. Likewise, The Workshop welcomes visitors of all ages to explore art through active participation and the Peggy L. Osher Art Study Room and Collection Committee Conference Room gives visitors the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the PMA Collection.
The museum’s public programs reach more than 54,000 visitors annually and are designed for visitors of all ages. The museum is proud to present and host a wide variety of educational opportunities, including gallery tours, artist talks, lectures, and special programming such as Family Days, PMA Films, and PMA360.
The museum is committed to collaborating with local organizations to foster meaningful partnerships and create unique experiences that help advance arts and culture in our community. This past year, the museum collaborated with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Learning Works, Maine Humanities Council, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), Maine Youth Rock Orchestra, and many others, demonstrating our continued dedication to engaging the greater Portland region.
