Murray Hantman (1904–1999) was a major painter in the American art world for more than 60 years, dividing his time between New York and Maine. Even though he, like many of his generation, moved away from representation into abstraction, nature remained the touchstone for his art, and Hantman was particularly inspired by the unique qualities of the environment and natural light on Maine’s Monhegan Island. At his death in 1999, Murray Hantman bequeathed his remaining artworks to the Portland Museum of Art, to be used for the benefit of the Museum’s exhibitions and education programs. Also part of Hantman’s bequest were sculptures by his wife, artist Jo Levy, and primitive paintings by his mother-in-law, Ruth Livingston. Sale proceeds will benefit Museum exhibitions and education programs.
